On
Monday, December 12, Menands School hosted the 1st
annual Mix It Up Day.
Our 7th grade class took the lead in creating a
wonderful experience for students in grades K through 8.
Mix It Up at Lunch Day
is a national campaign launched by Teaching Tolerance a decade ago.
In our surveys, students have identified the cafeteria as one
place where misunderstandings are likely to occur. As a result, one
day we asked students to move out of their comfort zones and connect
with someone new while they ate lunch.
It’s a simple act with profound implications. Studies have
shown that interactions across group lines can help reduce
prejudice. When students interact with those who are different from
them, biases and misperceptions can fall away.
