July 10 message from Dr. Long

Dear Menands families,

As I shared in my June 26th update, our planning and preparation for school this fall is well underway, despite a number of remaining unknowns.  I wish to thank those parents who accepted the invitation to join the conversation and become a part of the process.  Our principal, Mrs. Cannavo and I, were able to have our first meeting with this parent group this past Wednesday evening.  What they shared will be most helpful as we continue through this process. We will continue to meet regularly with this group, as well as our regional colleagues and our own facilities, instructional, and transportation staff to develop a thoughtful and comprehensive plan.

You have likely heard that the governor is expected early next week to provide far more guidance and direction to schools across the state.  We are being told, at present, that once this guidance is released, schools and districts will then need to finalize and submit their plans by July 31st, and that the governor will make a decision relative to reopening by August 6th.  Also anticipated early next week is additional information from the New York State Education Department and Board of Regents. Given this, we are going to hold off just a bit on our planned parent survey, so we are certain we are asking the most appropriate questions given the guidance.

As was the case at the time of my last communication, there remains a number of unanswered questions, but I am optimistic that we will know far more by next week.  We will continue to keep you informed as new information becomes available.  Please feel free to contact me via email: mlong@menands.org, or via phone (518) 465-4561 ext. 101.

Sincerely,

Dr. Maureen A. Long
Superintendent
