Masks no longer required outdoors on school grounds

Menands parents and families,

Thank you for your continued patience as we have worked to review the revised guidance from the NYS Department of Health (DOH) relative to mask wearing. That guidance in its entirety can be found on the DOH website. The relevant mask language can be found on pages 2, 4 and 9.

The DOH has revised its guidance to no longer require face masks outdoors on school grounds.  After consultation with members of the District Reopening Committee (which includes parents and staff) the district will follow this new guidance effective tomorrow, June 9. Mask use outdoors will be optional.

Please be aware of the following in this regard:

  • Teachers will provide guidance to students relative to this change, and staff will monitor and provide oversight during outdoor activities.
  • Masks are still required on buses and inside our school building.
  • Social distancing should continue to be observed outdoors and groups should not be congregating for long periods of time without masks.
  • Students and staff still have the option of wearing masks outside, and will not be discouraged from doing so if they so choose.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Dr. Maureen A. Long
