Menands School will host a day-long celebration of Hispanic heritage on Oct. 23 at the school.
A salsa dance troupe will spend the school day with students, teaching them the finer points of the Latin dance that are characterized by energetic footwork, fluid turns, and passionate movements.
Students in the middle school level will receive instruction from members of the Baila Albany Dance Studio.
That evening, national recording artist Alex Torres & His Latin Orchestra will perform at the school starting at 5:30 p.m. The 12-piece orchestra—that has performed for presidents and governors—blends Afro-Caribbean rhythms such as Salsa, Merengue, Cha-cha, Bomba, Plena and Latin Jazz in its musical offerings.
The concert is free and open to the Menands community. The school is located at 19 Warn Lane in the village.
Caribe Schenectady will provide a limited amount of food samples for the concert.
“This day-long celebration is part of our school’s ongoing commitment to highlighting the diverse nature of our community and the unique and fun traditions of the varied cultures that exist right here in Menands,” said Superintendent Jennifer Cannavo.
