Girls dancingNearly 200 community members enjoyed an evening concert by national recording artist Alex Torres & His Latin Orchestra as the Menands School concluded a daylong Hispanic Heritage celebration on Thursday.

The orchestra filled the school’s gymnasium with the rhythm and groove of salsa and body swaying merengues as students, family members and even Principal Kathleen Wylie danced to the tunes.

Earlier in the day, Felix Ortiz of the Baila Albany Dance Studio taught students in virtually every class the proper moves, energetic footwork, fluid turns, and passionate movements that make up salsa dancing.

SingerCaribe Schenectady provided a variety of Latin dishes during the evening concert.

“This day-long celebration was part of our school’s ongoing commitment to highlighting the diverse nature of our community and the unique and fun traditions of the varied cultures that exist right here in Menands,” said Superintendent Jennifer Cannavo.
