Kindergarten Information Night for School Year 2012-2013


If you are a resident of the Menands Union Free School District and have a child who will be 5 years old on or before December 1, 2012, please call the Menands School at 465-4561 to register for the upcoming school year.  Kindergarten Information Night for parents will be held on Wednesday, February 1, at 6:00 p.m.

Grades 4-7 and Band Winter Contert

On Thursday evening, January12, the band and grades 4-5 presented a winter concert, under the direction of Mrs. Sarah Horaczek, music teacher and band director.  The concert showcased the way music is integrated with ELA and social studies.  Mrs. Horaczek and her students are to be congratulated for a wonderful evening of music and dance. photos

Before School Care Program

 As of December 1st, the Troy YMCA has been offering a “Before Care Program” at Menands School.  The program begins at 7:00 a.m. and is limited to 30 students.  If you are interested in registering your child(ren) for this program, or would like further information, please contact the Troy YMCA Family Branch at 272-5900. 

Lost and Found

A “lost and found” table has been set up at the cafeteria entrance of the school.  If your child is missing any items, please have them check the lost & found table.

Mix It Up Day Held at Menands School

Citizens and Scholars Named for the First Quarter

Citizens and Scholars were named for the first quarter of school year 2011-12.  Voted on by the faculty, this is an honor students aspire to.  Please view the photos of this quarter's recipients. 

First Quarter Honors

Students who have been named to either the Superintendent's List, the High Honor Roll, or the Honor Roll for the first quarter of school year 2011-12 are pictured here.

School Start Time

School starts at Menands at 8:10 each day.  Parents who drive their children to school need to drop them off as close to 8:10 as possible so that students are not marked as tardy.  Being in school on time ensures that each student has a smooth start to the day.

 

Students in Grades 1-8 Take "MAPS" Assessments

The "MAPS" assessments (Measure of Academic Progress) are computer based assessments taken three times a year in order to inform teachers' classroom instruction.  The assessments will help to signal the objectives in the curriculum that students have mastered and the objectives that need to be reinforced. more

 

Teacher Professional Development Days

By September 2012, all public school in the state need to be in full implementation of the new Common Core Learning Standards.  We are being very ambitious in ensuring that our teachers have the professional development neede  to transition to the changes equired by NYSED.     more

Class Size

While many school districts are experiencing a decline in their number of students, Menands School has reached the highest enrollment in its history.  We currently have 259 students in kindergarten through eighth grade.  more

Free or Reduced Price Breakfast and Lunch

Given the economic challenges that many families are facing, your children may qualify for free or reduced price school meals.  If you would like more information about this, please call our school counselor, Mrs. VandenBerg, or our secretary, Mrs. Miller.  If your family is eligible, we want you to have this benefit.

 

Colonie Center Wants to Help Us Earn Money For Our School! 

Every time you, your family. and your friends shop at Colonie Center, you help Menands School earn points.  At the end of the school year, Colonie Center will give away $20,000 in cash prizes to the top 10 schools.  (continued)
