Menands School Expands High School Choices

Menands graduates have always had the unique opportunity to select from designated high school choices.  We are very excited that we have worked this year to increase the available choices from three to five, thus expanding the  options and opportunities available to our graduates.  In the 2015 -16 school year, students will have the option of attending Heatly Junior/Senior High School, Shaker High School, South Colonie High School, Tech Valley High School, or Watervliet Junior/Senior High School. This year we held a high school fair where the members of the Class of 2015 and their parents could meet representatives from the different high schools.  (information) (photos 1)  (photos 2)

Representatives from District Attorney David Soares Speak to Students About New Program

In conjunction with the Menands School District's committment to the OLWEUS anti-bullying program, a morning of lessons and activities were held on Tuesday, February3.  The students joined representatives from DA David Soares' Community Justice Outreach Center who presented information about the Words Can Hurt/Words Can Heal program. DA Soares is challenging students in Albany County to put their words into action by doing random acts of kindness.  The students at our school have enthusiastically taken part in the Random Acts of Kindness initiative since the beginning of the school year. James Preller, author of  many children's books including Bystander, Priate's Guide, Before You Go, Scary Tales, and Jigsaw Jones, visited Menands School on Thursday, February 5, and met with students throughout the day, answering their questions about and discussing the writer's life and career.  In the evening, Literacy Night was held at the school, with lots of special activities.   (photos)

When there is inclement weather, residents should tune to WGY, WROW or WTRY radio as well as TV channels 6, 10 and 13 for school closings or late openings.  If the Menands School is opening later due to weather, all bus runs will be delayed in Menands.  For example, if the Menands School is opening one hour late, then all buses transporting students outside the district will also be running one hour later.  If the Menands School is closed due to weather, transportation to high schools and private schools will be at the discretion of the Superintendent.  Also, when school is canceled during the day, after-school and night activities at the school are also canceled.

If parents have changed home and/or work phone numbers or emergency contacts, please contact Menands School at 465-4561 to update contact information.
