Menands School District and Menands Library
Budgets Pass
On Tuesday, May 21, residents of the Menands Union Free School
District approved the proposed $7,838,649 budget for 2013-2014 with
a 77.6% approval rating. The approved budget represents a spending
increase of 2.15% and a tax levy increase of 1.99%. Jeff Masline,
current president of the Board of Education, was re-elected to a
five year term.
The Menands Library budget passed with an approval rating of
82.6%. Leslie Carolus was elected to a five year term as a library
trustee.

Winners
Congratulations to the students in grades
4 and 8 who received 2013 Physical Education Student
Leadership
Awards on Monday, May 6 at Hudson Valley Community College.
These students have demostrated good citizenship, leadership, and
contributed to the total physical education program at Menands.

First Grade Visits Exhibit
Through the
Body" at Colonie Center. Students enjoyed interactive
presentations on the heart, lungs, and the ears. They
inflated healthy and diseased lungs and examined a cow's
heart and compared it to their own.

Second Grade Guests of Honor at
Earth Day Celebration
Menands School second graders were the guests of honor at
Peebles Island State Park in Waterford on Monday, April 22
at a celebration of Earth Day and the release of a new book
on New York State wildlife. Students participated in a
program on "Watchable Wildlife," which included making their
own binoculars and wildlife masks, observing snakes and
turtles, and studying animal skulls and skeletons. Ask any
of our second graders about the song they performed - "Grey
Squirrel, Grey Squirrel, Shake Your Bushy Tail!"...or wach

The Menands School Drama Club, under the direction of Mrs.
Jennifer Cannavo and Mrs. Sarah Horaczek, performed
Annie Jr. on the evening of March 23. The
students impressed everyone with their dramatic, comedic,
and musical talents.

Celebrating Us-Menands School PTA Cultural Fair
Menands School PTA hosted a
cultural fair to celebrate the many cultures and customs
represented in our school and community. The event was held
on March 7, 2013, from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in the school gym.
Everyone enjoyed traveling to sixteen different countries to learn
interesting facts and sample traditional foods and dishes.

Transportation Requests
All requests for transportation to private or parochial
schools that students will be attending during the 2013-14
school year must be submitted by residents to the Menands
School. The includes students attending Shaker H.S.,
Watervliet H.S., Tech Valley and all private schools.

possible for the Menands School District to be connected to
their emergency notification system,entitled First Call. Through
this system, the school will be able to send electronic messages
to you about such emergencies as an early dismissal, or such

The Menands School District works closely with parents and
guardians to ensure the safety of students at all times. Parents
