Menands School Music Program Gains National Recognition
New Federal Education Law, Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA), Places New Emphasis on Music and the Arts as a key to a “Well-Rounded Education”
Menands School has been honored with the SupportMusic Merit Award from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education for the third year in a row. Our school joins 118 schools across the country in receiving the prestigious award in 2016.
The SupportMusic Merit Award is awarded to individual schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.
Schools that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation are often held up as models for other educators looking to boost their own music education programs.
This award recognizes that Menands School is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the new federal education legislation, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The legislation, signed into law in December 2015, replaces No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), which was often criticized for an overemphasis on testing —while leaving behind subjects such as music. ESSA recommends music and the arts as important elements of a well-rounded education for all children.
As schools finalize their 2016-2017 budgets, the NAMM Foundation’s SupportMusic Merit Award and the implementation of the federal ESSA law bring attention to the importance of keeping music education part of the school’s core education for all students. It also highlights music’s vital role in students’ overall success in school.

— 3.14159265359 or 3.14 for short.

A Vision for Menands School: Menands Legacy Planning Web Page
The Board of Education in collaboration with representatives from the entire Menands School Community continues their work of developing a vision of our school for the future. This vision will guide decisions relative to our building and facilities and a potential building improvement project. Any project or improvements should be rooted in that vision - what we want for the children of our community, and not simply about bricks and mortar. With the expertise, and under the guidance of Robert Hendriks, of Educational Legacy Planning, faculty, staff and members of the greater Menands community have been involved in the conversation. This work has been captured on our own Menands Legacy Plan web site which can be accessed at the following link:
The vision will be finalized in the coming weeks, and the work to achieve it will continue. Please continue to check the web site for updates and information.
Working papers can now be found online. Please go to the "Quick Links" section of the website and click on "forms".
