Proposed budget increases tax levy by 0.31%
Menands residents will go to the polls on Tuesday, May 18 to vote on a proposed $10.28 million spending plan for the 2021-22 school year.
Under the proposed budget, spending would increase by $451,265 over the current year. The increase is offset by a significant increase in revenue in the form of Foundation Aid, which will limit the impact to taxpayers. The additional revenue is not only recurring, but also scheduled to increase over the next two years in light of the state’s recent decision to fully fund school Foundation Aid.
The proposed budget carries a tax levy increase of $22,497, or 0.31%, which is within the allowable tax levy cap as calculated by the state’s formula. As a result, a simple majority (50% plus one vote) is needed for approval.
The proposed budget maintains all existing programs and opportunities for students while also enhancing technology hardware and support, and dedicated professional development opportunities that align with district goals. Additionally, the proposal continues to support the increasingly diverse student population and student needs, consistent with the district’s mission and goals.
“The Board of Education has been very thoughtful in developing a long-range plan that continues to improve upon existing high-quality programs and supports for our students,” Superintendent Dr. Maureen Long said. “The board has also been mindful of our taxpayers. This year, in light of the hardships felt by many as a result of the pandemic, it was critical to have a budget within the allowable tax cap and with a minimal increase.”
In the event of a defeated budget, the 2021-22 tax levy may not increase beyond the amount of the 2020-21 tax levy. The district would have to reduce the proposed budget, potentially affecting school programs, services, and planned technology upgrades.

- You are eligible to vote if you are a U.S. citizen, 18 or older and a resident of the school district for at least 30 days prior to the vote.
- A completed absentee ballot application must be received by May 11 if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter or the day before the election if the ballot is to be picked up at the District Office. The ballot itself must be returned to the District Clerk no later than 5 p.m. on May 18.
